9.00 (very good) This one was superb. I didn't think a movie with a biker gang-member for a protagonist could be so deep, but...

Banner of the Stars

Last Updated: Feb 14, 2010

8.00 (good) ...Space Elves, Huzzah!! An interesting take on war and the tensions that lead up to it. I've only seen Crest of Stars, not Banner.

Bleach

Last Updated: Jan 24, 2010

6.00 (average) "Shoot to death, Shinsou"
Bleach isn't my favorite shonen, but it has its moments. It also has its filler.

Boogiepop Phantom

Last Updated: Feb 14, 2010

7.75 (good) A intriguing, surreal show. Watch the commentary to get a better understanding of the vague plot ... by the time you finish, you might be able to tell all the generic high school girls apart. I liked Boogiepop's hook-shot thing.

Bubblegum Crisis

9.00 (very good) ...Tokyo 2040. I haven't seen the original. This one, though, was nearly flawless.

7.00 (above average) This series brought up a lot of incredibly interesting and relevant issues

Chaos Head

Seen: completely

Last Updated: Feb 14, 2010

7.25 (above average) This show somehow managed to be simultaneously horrible and unique. The main character is a hikikomori with an awesome voice actor. Terrible things keep happening all around him; he is notified of some bizarre murders before they happen; stereotypical anime girls spout off insane jargon to him at the slightest provocation; he suffers constant hallucinations that blur reality and delusion. And just when I was getting intrigued the anime felt the need to explain everything and degrade into a generic Power Ranger fight against a boring final villain. The show

7.00 (above average) Is meeting a girl who can't talk a fetish I'm not familiar with, or what?

Clannad

7.50 (good) Sort of made me want to die, and I haven't even seen the second half of Afterstory.

7.00 (above average) Very girly, but that doesn't mean it isn't good. Loved the intro song.

4.75 (moderate) Everyone else has already said it, but yeah...Chobits gone bad.

Death Note

9.00 (very good) Don't think I can talk about this one w/out bringing up episode 25 and bursting into tears.

Dennou Coil

Seen: completely

Last Updated: Jan 24, 2010

8.25 (good) A melancholy show depicting a world where the internet is even more horrible and obnoxious. The protagonists use glasses that allow them to seamlessly interact with the virtual world. This serves as a device that blurs reality and illusion, giving the show an odd 'Plato's Allegory of the Cave' feel. Much of the story is devoted to the characters' longing for something lost or unattainable...it comments on philosophy as related to the human condition, in other words. In spite of all its depth, the show did suffer from under-utilization of some characters, as well as rushed, sappy ending.

Detective Conan

7.75 (good) Repetative, but oddly addicting. Must be the gore factor...

Eden of the East

Seen: completely

Last Updated: Feb 14, 2010

7.25 (above average) A guy with amnesia, no clothes, a gun, and a the world's best cell phone plan is apparently involved in some rich guy's incredibly vague plan to save Japan from something. That's a nice hook, I'd say. Too bad the show ended after throwing the viewer a quick, nonsensical explanation for everything in the last episode, then flashing a 'catch you next season lolz' sign.

Elfen Lied

Seen: completely

Last Updated: May 06, 2008

8.00 (good) A bloody, nudist-filled crash-course on the evils of the human heart, or something.

Eureka 7

Seen: completely

Last Updated: Jan 24, 2010

6.75 (above average) Gundam meets surfer culture; all the fun of learning to cope with killing someone while searching for great waves. The show built up a momentum that kept me interested until the last couple of of episodes, which were atrocious.

Fate/stay night

Seen: completely

Last Updated: Jul 05, 2008

6.75 (above average) Filled with too many inferences to be coherent.

Fruits Basket

Seen: partially

Last Updated: Sep 20, 2006

8.00 (good) Waduya mean it's for girls? Anyways, this one focuses primarily on character development, so I would prefer it over, say, DBZ

Full Metal Panic!

Seen: completely; Own: partially;

Last Updated: Jan 18, 2010

7.00 (above average) Military drama, mecha-action and school life are all crammed together to form a vague monstrosity that has no idea what to do with itself. The Second Raid (which I own) easily surpasses the original by maintaining a fairly serious, focused plot line.

Fullmetal Alchemist

Last Updated: Jan 18, 2010

5.50 (average) Great series until it plunged into filler about halfway through. FMA: Brotherhood, however, seems to stick to the manga. I'm hoping this means the new series will avoid the obvious pitfall of having Hitler show up in the finale.

Ga-rei

Seen: completely

Last Updated: Jan 18, 2010

8.50 (very good) I should specify that I've seen Ga-rei Zero, which is a prequel, I think. Excellent show, although the first few episodes were a bit odd. The plot is mainly driven by character interaction, not action, thus it has many emotional moments.

Ghost in the Shell

8.75 (very good) Deep. I think it deserves all the hype it has generated.

Gintama

Seen: partially

Last Updated: Feb 14, 2010

8.50 (very good) Normally I don't like comedic animes ... but Gintama has a sharp, spastic wit that makes it obscenely interesting to watch every once and a while. I've seen up to episode 35.

Gunslinger Girl

8.75 (very good) Disclaimer

Haibane Renmei

9.00 (very good) A really good, subtle and touching show. But whatever. Lain could KILL Rakka with her angst.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

Seen: partially

Last Updated: Jan 24, 2010

5.75 (average) How many ways can the same group of emotionally unstable morons kill each other? Okay, this show deserves a bit more credit then that...but it's obvious that it was based off a video game. I think I've seen up until the twenty-second episode of the first season.

Hunter x Hunter

Seen: completely

Last Updated: Jan 18, 2010

7.75 (good) The protagonist is utterly brainless and fights with a fishing pole, and yet this show is somehow better than most other shonen

Inuyasha

Seen: partially

Last Updated: Jun 09, 2007

7.00 (above average) Captivated me for awhile, but then it kept going.

Kino no Tabi

Seen: completely; Own: completely;

Last Updated: Jan 24, 2010

8.75 (very good) A philosophical show that explores why humankind is so irrational. Some people won't like each episode (with one exception) being standalone stories linked together only by the two protagonists, but I don't think this type of show could have been done any other way.

Last Exile

Seen: completely; Own: completely;

Last Updated: Sep 20, 2006

8.50 (very good) Pretty good, but the ending bugged me. Superb animation, though.

Mobile Suit Gundam 00

Seen: completely

Last Updated: Jan 18, 2010

7.50 (good) The first season was somewhat realistic, with political factions and conflicting ideologies influencing events and driving the show forward. Building off the momentum of the first's finale, the second season started strong but soon made the infinitely foolish mistake of trying to bring romance to the story's forefront. This, coupled with increasingly abstract character motivations, contributed to an overall lackluster ending.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny

Last Updated: Jan 18, 2010

7.25 (above average) Lacked the original's level of angst, which diminished the emotional impact of the show. In addition, Shin is a turd.

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing

Seen: completely

Last Updated: Jun 09, 2007

8.50 (very good) Well...I liked it. Many Gundam fans hate this series for some reason.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team

Seen: completely

Last Updated: Jan 18, 2010

9.00 (very good) One of the best Gundams. The story fits into the Universal Century timeline, but its events aren't directly connected to the older UCs. This is a good thing, because the standalone plot is less convoluted and marred by age than, say, Zeta Gundam.

Monster

Seen: completely

Last Updated: May 06, 2008

9.25 (very good) A long, deep and dark journey into the depths of the human psyche. Do not watch while depressed.

My-HiME

Last Updated: Jun 09, 2007

8.25 (good) Vaguely resembles Sailor Moon with a more multilayered plot, more angst, and more fan service. Mikoto brought the score up.

My-Otome

8.25 (good) YayferYuri! With the re-use of its cast, (Did Nao's personality not change at all?) this is the unofficial sequal to My-HIME.

Naruto

9.00 (very good) I'm a Narutard. Theres nothing I can do about it. The fillers kinda make me want to carpet-bomb a colony of baby seals, though.

NHK ni Youkoso!

Seen: completely; Own: completely;

Last Updated: Jan 18, 2010

9.25 (very good) This was an overall great show. It deals with the subjects such as depression, agoraphobia, and perversion ... and while the tone is somewhat dark (in slight deviation from the manga), the bizarre humor keeps the viewer's mood from plummeting.

Ouran High School Host Club

8.50 (very good) In spite of the heavy Shoujo themes, it also does a great job of mocking moe.

Paranoia Agent

9.25 (very good) Dark yet humerous...and has a decent dub, too.

Planetes

8.00 (good) It's about picking up trash...in space. And as of episode 5, it's good.

Read Or Die

Seen: completely; Own: completely;

Last Updated: Jan 18, 2010

8.75 (very good) Another really good show that's hampered slightly by a rushed ending. I don't know why I'm always surprised by this sort of thing with anime.

Rozen Maiden

Seen: completely

Last Updated: Jan 18, 2010

8.75 (very good) Touches upon the angst and pain of everyday life using battle-dolls. While the first season is subtle and psychological, the second expands upon the plot and injects a lot more action into the later episodes. The OVA bridges the gap between the two seasons rather well. Traumed's infamous deus ex magina ending was so horribly unforgivable that the studio even apologized for it.

Rurouni Kenshin

9.00 (very good) I should buy this.

Samurai Champloo

Seen: completely

Last Updated: Jan 18, 2010

6.25 (average) This series proved that stand-alone episodes will never be able to communicate an overarching storyline. Its vague plot existed only as an excuse for flashy fights to occur randomly.
